GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Performs responsible unskilled work in the maintenance of buildings and grounds, water, wastewater infrastructure, street operations, snow removal, and general maintenance work by performing the following duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Directs traffic and guides truck operator in congested areas.
Operates light equipment such as tractor, riding lawnmower, bush hog, clearing right-of-ways, and maintaining grounds.
Maintains grounds by cutting grass, trimming hedges, and picking up litter.
Assists equipment operator in cleaning streets and collecting leaves.
Services and makes minor repairs and adjustments on small construction equipment and tools.
Conducts preventive maintenance on trucks, such as checking oil and fluids, changing oil if necessary, and making minor repairs.
Reads water meters.
Operates miscellaneous construction equipment such as ditch tamper, tapping machine, air compressor, power tools etc. in conjunction with assigned task.
Assist in maintaining water and sewer infrastructure.
Performs tasks in all types of weather conditions.
Participates in on-call coverage on a rotating basis to respond to Town emergencies.
Other duties may be assigned.

Ability to perform heavy manual labor, sometimes under adverse conditions.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted.
Some knowledge of grounds maintenance activities
Ability to operate grounds maintenance equipment, such as lawnmowers and weed-eaters.
General knowledge of standard hand tools and equipment.
Ability to understand and follow oral instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Good communication and writing skills.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High School diploma or general education degree (GED).
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of the following licenses, certificates, and/or registrations is required to perform the essential duties of this job.
Valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Class B with tanker endorsement Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia within 12 months.
Obtain pesticide license within 12 months of hiring date.
